Teaching Philosophy
Whatever the topic, Alex's instruction is grounded in these philosophies:
1. Begin with the end in mind.
As the Cheshire Cat explained to Alice in Wonderland, if you don't know where you're going, then any road will get you there. In other words: Without a clear outcome in mind, making a plan is sort of pointless, and ending up anywhere good would just be a happy accident. But nobody "accidentally" reaches worthy goals. Tremendous power and thinking come from developing a clear, specific, and measurable picture of your desired outcome. It's the hard work that makes the rest of the work much easier.
2. Pursue simplicity on the other side of complexity.
The complex must be made simple to facilitate learning, not by "dumbing it down" but by stripping away unnecessary noise. Human beings won't sacrifice comfort and familiarity for the sole purpose of following instructions, no matter how simple. But when you journey through why and how in a relatable way, you may find it downright easy to do important work you'd otherwise avoid.
3. Translate thinking into action.
"Education" is learning for learning's sake; "training" is learning for earning's sake. Rapid implementation is critical to achieving a return on your investment of time, which means every effective training conversation results in a small number of written action steps to be accomplished starting immediately.
